Our SexEd Creative Curricula page is here!

We’ve been busy this summer trying to get some of the great work from this spring online. Finally, we have a Creative SexEd Curricula page! There are games, zines, ‘dealbreaker’ lists, and other fun, thought-provoking activities that combine making with sex ed topics.

Working with People interviews with our Parsons Collab: Sex Ed Students

Check out these great interviews with some of the students from our Collab: Sex Ed course at Parsons! They are part of the Working with People : Keywords project. The Keywords project is an online resource that explores the different definitions of words like “Collaboration” and “Environment” that are frequently used, but can have very different meanings for different people.

http://www.working-with-people.org/dylan-demanski-collaboration/

http://www.working-with-people.org/maxime-coleon-collaboration-environment/

Working with People creates a critical framework for the increasing interest that has emerged in working with people beyond the academy, in collaborative and generative practices. “Civic engagement,” “design for social change,” and other types of “engaged” pedagogical practice create both opportunities and responsibilities for developing new curricula that explicitly focus on teaching and learning about collaborative practices and contexts. It is critical when, as is often the case, the people and groups in question are regarded as societal “others” and issues of sensitivity and translation across cultures or other real or perceived divides could become a challenge.

Yet, when we talk about community-university collaborations, some powerful words are ill-defined; other critical words are conspicuously absent. This project and this online resource hopes to foster challenging collisions between different understandings of crucial keywords to build a more nuanced way of working with people.

SexEd receives an ABOG Fellowship for Socially-Engaged Art (SEA)!

We are so happy to announce that we are the recipients of an ABOG Fellowship for SociallyEngaged Art (SEA) for SexEd. This one-year fellowship pairs $20,000 in unrestricted project support with strategic assistance, assessment and documentation of each project, access to facilities, and other tailored resources.

The SEA Fellowship will support SexEd as it initiates an artist residency at the school-based health center and develops an arts-based sexual health curriculum at Washington Irving High School Campus in New York City. SexEd will focus on key themes identified by students, teachers and health center staff on campus including HIV/AIDS, gender, healthy relationships, pleasure, and consent.

We are one of 7 projects ABOG is funding this year, for more info check out their website: http://www.abladeofgrass.org/ablog/a-blade-of-grass-announces-inaugural-fellows-for-socially-engaged-art/.

Come join us at “Yeah, That’s What She Said” on Sunday March 30!

We are thrilled to be part of “Yeah, That’s What She Said,” a weekend-long arts and education festival at Specials on C on the Lower East Side. On Sunday March 30, as part of “Gaze for Days,” Karen B. K. Chan and Johana Moscoso’s SexEd videos by will be screened, and Norene & Liz will be participating in the filmmakers panel discussion — so come on out! This event is open to people of all gender expressions.

There are also tons of amazing workshops Saturday and Sunday for anyone who self-identifies as a woman, from “Know Your Cervix, Love Your Body” to “Political Education with AF3IRM.” Sign up, it’s sliding scale so no one will be turned away: http://yeahthatswhatshesaidnyc.tumblr.com/workshops.

This is an intersectional-feminist event, centering the work of all woman-identified folks, women of color, queer women and working-class women. While YTWSS is aiming for inter-generational inclusivity, a good deal of the content will be aimed at the grown-and-sexy and may deal with mature themes.

Healthy Relationship Posters

Inspired by our collaborative definition of a healthy relationship, freshmen at Washington Irving created some really amazing posters to encourage other students to choose healthy relationships! The posters will be on display in the 422 Health Center. See them on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sexedproject/sets/72157639589795326/

Healthy Relationships at Washington Irving

Based on the feedback we got from Washington Irving students at the health fair, we’re using our three HealthClass2.0 sessions to create:

1. A collaborative definition of what a healthy relationship is and feels like.

2. Posters, inspired by this definition, to encourage other students to choose healthy relationships.

The final posters will be exhibited in the 422 Health Center!

Washington Irving Campus Health Fair Nov. 14, 2013

SexEd was at the Washington Irving Campus Health Fair in NYC, asking students what they wanted to learn in sex ed class. We’ll be using this info to plan our HealthClass2.0 workshops and spring Parsons course. We’re still tallying the hundreds of responses–thanks to everyone who participated!

HealthClass2.0 got funding!

As part of the HealthClass2.0 team, Liz Slagus and Norene Leddy (SexEd) received one of five grants from the Fund for Collaborative Innovation. HC2.0 aims to help young people in New York City develop healthy habits while building our understanding of the structural factors that contribute to health and food insecurity in under-resourced communities. Leddy and Slagus will be working with HC2.0 founder Natalia Mehlman-Petrzela (Lang) to develop and implement new HC2.0 curriculum that combines art and sex education. This program is made possible by a two-year grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and is part of The New School’s Social Innovation Initiative.
